ASPMS hopes to support Mormon Studies in Spanish and Portuguese by sharing information via this website and promoting these studies. It is hoped that this website will become the online hub of Mormon Studies in Spanish and Portuguese and that our efforts will assist scholars working on Mormon-related topics.
By “Mormon†we mean the Joseph Smith movement in all its manifestations. By “Mormon Studies†we mean the academic study of Mormon theology, history, culture, and sociology. By “Latin America†and “Iberia†we mean to attract both scholars in Latin America and Iberia interested in studying Mormonism in general–from various perspectives–and any scholars interested in studying Mormonism in Latin America and other Spanish or Portuguese-speaking areas of the world. By “academic†we mean the scholarly approach to knowledge and understanding, one that strives for objectivity. There are other fora for devotional, apologetic, or critical studies of Mormonism. This does not, however, preclude those who approach Mormonism from positions of faith, nor those not associated with a university.
We are happy to advertise all Mormon Studies activities that are mostly academic rather than devotional or critical in nature.
ASPMS will operate in English as well as in Spanish and Portuguese, and we will make every effort to promote studies in Spanish and Portuguese. Despite our concentration on these three languages, we are happy to carry foreign language announcements and support other activities outside of the Anglophone world.
ASPMS is not affiliated with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, nor any other organization.
